I started this site the way most people probably start with smart home tech: by buying one cheap smart plug on a whim, not really expecting much, and then getting genuinely hooked once I realized how much small friction it removed from my day. One plug turned into a couple of bulbs. A couple of bulbs turned into a speaker, then a camera, then a lot of late-night reading trying to figure out why two devices from different brands refused to talk to each other.
That last part, honestly, is the real reason this site exists. When I was starting out, I found plenty of flashy product pages and «top 10» lists, but very few places that just explained things plainly: what a hub actually does, whether you really need one, which protocol makes sense for which device, and what’s worth your money versus what’s just marketing. So I started writing down what I was learning, mostly for myself at first, and it slowly turned into this.

Automating Our Home is built around one simple idea: you shouldn’t need to be an engineer to build a home that works a little smarter for you. So instead of drowning you in jargon, we try to explain things the way we wish someone had explained them to us — clearly, honestly, and with the trade-offs included, not just the highlights.
You’ll find guides on the basics (like what a smart home actually is and whether you need a hub), practical comparisons between ecosystems and protocols, and buying guides for specific categories like security cameras, lighting, and climate control. We also cover the less glamorous stuff, like troubleshooting, because let’s be honest, that’s where most people actually spend their time once the initial excitement wears off.
Our Approach
A few things we try to stick to on this site:
- We say when something isn’t worth it. Not every smart gadget deserves a spot in your home, and we’d rather tell you that than pad out a list.
- We explain the «why,» not just the «what.» Understanding how something works makes every future decision easier, so we try to build that understanding rather than just hand you a shopping list.
- We stay current. This is a fast-moving space — new standards like Matter, new devices, new price points — so we regularly revisit and update our older guides rather than letting them go stale.
Why «Automating Our Home»?
Because that’s really what this is: an ongoing, slightly messy, genuinely enjoyable project of making a house respond a bit more intelligently to the people living in it. We don’t think a smart home needs to be complicated or expensive to be worth having, and this site is our attempt to prove that, one guide at a time.
